Leading a Leftover Lifestyle

Hey Frugal Mommas!

In today's economy, planning for everyday expenses and future inheritances is financially challenging. Between gas, daycare, co-pays, and bills, our pay checks have to stretch further than ever before. It is with the mounting cost of life that I am determined to live a Leftover Lifestyle. I hope that my plan helps your budget and decreases some stress for you.

Food: It occurred to me the other day, that for almost a month, I had not eaten at a fast food restaurant  I had stuck to cooking a big enough dinner to have enough for lunch the next day. Not only did my wallet thank me but so did my waist line. I have made up in my mind that it is very important that I plan my lunch for the next day the night before. I have even gone so far as to plan two weeks worth of family meals before I go grocery shopping. I build in days for leftovers and purchase food that will make a quick lunch.Just having the list ha reduced the anxiety of having to answer the dreaded question of "What's for Dinner?"

Clothing: As most moms of toddlers know, how your little one looks when they go to daycare and when they come home is drastically different. I can tell what activities and food my little one had just by looking at her clothes. I enjoy planning adorable outfits with matching hair bows for her and seeing her outfit and hair have fallen victim to her joyous day can be disheartening. Between her daycare activities and ever growing body, buying clothes every season is a must. This can be brutal on a family budget. So I am determined to mix and mingle consignment and new clothing. I look on consignmentmommies.com to find local sales and place them on my calender. I have in mind what she needs before I go so that I can be a focused hunter. I stick to buying socks, bathing suits, and swim shoes new. Even for myself the thrift store is my best friend! Its great for building my wardrobe at a low cost. You can even get discounts with a military i.d. or on certain days with a free membership card. Another tip is to reshop your own closet. Take a new look at old items and choose to rock them in a new way.

Personal Care: Taking care of Mommy, is usually low on my list but is absolutely necessary. For my personal care items I hunt at the dollar store and purchase store brand items at grocery stores. Even with make-up, I'm consistently looking for a good deal. Now anyone that knows me knows I'm a Mally girl (mally.com or mally beauty on QVC), but her high quality products can be a bit high for my budget. The beauty supply i my best friend! You can find inexpensive jewelry, hair care for you and little one, and try out new make up shades at a low price.

Customer Loyalty: I'm always signing up for customer loyalty programs for restaurants  stores, and more. They are a great way to get coupon and notifications for sales. You can even reduce the cot of gas at certain stations just for buying your groceries.

Ok Moms...now you've got the tools to live a Leftover Lifestyle. Go and live it fiercely! TTYL!

Smell Check One Two One Two

Good Morning Mamas! As I drove into work this morning I was reflecting on my labor, delivery, and hospital stay. I thought about the joyous challenge of giving birth to my little one and all of the love I immediately felt when I met her. Then the thought of the attack of the funk fluttered into my happy memories. It is with that assault that I offer the following advice. Enlist the help of a smell and scenery partner!

The job description of a smell and scenery partner is to always make sure that you and your hospital smell good. You will more than likely have a flood of visitors come to see and meet you and your little one. If your experience was anything like mine was, you wont get much sleep between feedings, testing, and sleep intrusive nurses who mean well. Smell and Scenery Partner to the rescue! Armed with scented candles (flame less to be safe), body spray, sponge bath tools, and a nursing cover they will have you protected from guests smelling the less than pretty side of recent child birth.

I  recommend that your smell and scenery partner not be daddy. Let him enjoy your little one two. He can interact and care for your little one while your S&S partner gives you a sponge bath, helps you with a fresh gown, hands you mouth wash, and gives your lips some moisture.

The tour of duty for your smell and scent partner is from the moment you go into labor and the duration of your hospital stay. You may want to have a rotation of at least two people. They don't have to stay the entire day just pop in and help you feel like a clean momma. It's best that you choose your partner at least a month before you are due and that they know where you will be keeping your toiletries.

Well moms, that's all for now...get out there and start interviewing!

She Loves Me She Loves Me Not

Hey Mamas! Its bathing suit season...are you ready? What you ate in winter will show in the summer! I'm on this mission to embrace my new body and have been having a few hiccups along the way. My body and me are in a love hate relationship. I look at my reflection and begin searching my thoughts, asking myself "What do I think is sexy?" "Where did I get the definition of sexy?" "Why do I feel its important to loose weight?" "Is it really for health or to conform to a certain image of beauty?" I have a philosophical debate with my scale every morning. I am obsessed with weighing myself and my mood is effected by the number that stares back at me. I have to consciously tell myself not to compare my body to other moms..and boy is it hard! I have a body loving mantra taped to my bathroom mirror from the Booty Parlor book that I often ignore. I look at old pictures of myself and notice that my stomach was flatter and it saddens me. The sad part is I know how to eat healthy and exercise but its so much harder to do now. I just dont have the motivation I used to have. I start a diet in the morning and by the afternoon I've broken it! I have started to use Slimquick and it has produced results in the past. When I truly watched what I ate and worked out, I lost at least 3-5lbs a week. What I need is an event motivation. Like in 3 months I'll be attending a wedding and the thought of how I'll look in my dress and pictures has got to stop me from snacking on bite size candies and eating fast food. Will you ladies join me and be my body changing partners? If you are interested please post your comments, suggestions, and struggles. Let's help each other out.

Hello Old Friend

Hello Wondrous Mothers!

It's been so long since we stopped for a chat. I've been away thinking that I had no tips to share. Upon rifling through my spring and summer clothes I came across my stash of maternity wear and smiled. It warmed my heart to remember the joyous journey of dressing my body built for two. It rekindled my love for talking about all of the adventures in motherhood. So here I go again!

I once saw a woman nurse her toddler and put the child down once finished. I thought to myself I'll never nurse a child that can walk to me to nurse and almost 17 months later I am! I completely understand nursing until both mom and baby are ready to wean. I find myself riddled with guilt now that I have decided to stop breast feeding. I miss it like a realtive that has moved out of state. The one who you long to see and once they've been around for a week, long to see leave. I will always fondly remeber the bonding my daughter and I had and look forward to relating to her in a different format.

I am excited about learning this new body, appreciating my new curves, and remembering that my breasts are for more than feeding utensils. Where are you in the quest for balance of being a wonderful mom, attentive mate, and all around sexy diva?

Goal: Reload and Revamp

I'm personally still battling the monstrous villain stretch marks and the dreaded post pregnancy pooch. To be completely honest I havent been putting up much of a fight but rather embracing my new reflection. I did receive a sample of a wonderful product by Booty Parlor. The product is a skin firming lotion that is supposed to lift what dropped...sort of like a bra for your whole body! I'll keep you updated on how its working.

I am currently researching safe diet and exercise plans that will actually motivate me to stick to them so any suggestions would help. As of right now I'm participating in every free form of exercise I can find. I take the steps instead of the elevator, park the car a little further, and use my chevralegs for local errands. When I want to spice up my routine I skip every other step when climbing them.

I found a wonderful book by the founder of Booty Parlor that really boosted my self esteem. Mojo Makeover. In just thirty days, The Official Booty Parlor Mojo Makeover will help women of any age become more confident, more enthusiastic, and more satisfied. Filled with inspiring and practical advice, how-to tips and tricks, interactive exercises, and real-life anecdotes, this fun four-week program is sure to leave women feeling happier, sexier, and more fulfilled—whether they're in a relationship or not.

Dressing this new body has been an interesting task. Coaching myself to not feel discouraged by the clothes I can't fit is a necessary action. But what I've learned is that what was a fashion fit at age 21 may not be one for over 25 regardless of what size is on the label. But to be honest the size of the clothing isn't the only thing that disturbs me but rather spending money on wardrobe does. I have the mom guilt of buying something for myself and then thinking of all of the things I could have purchased for my little one. So between the size change and mom guilt buying clothes isn't as stress relieving as it used to be. But I am going to stick to it. I plan on perusing my old haunts to find chic ensembles.

Well Mamas, Mama's gotta get back to work. Bacon doesn't get brought home by itself! See you soon.

You Glow Girl

Hey Fellow Mommies!
I am a die hard make-up fan and love the polished look I have when I wear it but I often have very little time to put on a full face. On those days when time is short and so is my patience I want to walk out with a bare face and feel confident. In my quest to maintain a summer of simplistic beauty, Ive been searching for inexpensive ways to improve the look of my skin. As much as I would love to run out and buy Estee Lauder's Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator, which by the way is $58 for one ounce, I cant justify the purchase with the rising cost of gas and diapers. So I'm going to complete my glowing skin ritual au natural. Below is my grocery store arsenal to complete my Good to Glow mission.

Blueberries. This healthy snack is packed full of antioxidants, are easy to pack, and are delicious treats. They help prevent premature aging which comes in handy for those sleepless nights.

Carrots. These orange agent help to clear up blemishes. Instead of reaching for those greasy chips crunch on carrots and feel confident you are giving your skin a treat.

Green tea with lemon. Drink two cups a day and watch out for luminous skin! I drink one in the morning and one before bed. The lemon juice helps your body absorb all of the benefits of the tea. If you also looking to drop a few pounds, green tea can act as a double agent.

Almonds. Its best to pop a couple of these in the morning before you eat so that you absorb all of its nutrient goodness. They help to keep give your skin an abundance of moisture. They also can help you shed a few pounds.

Tomato. The lycopene in tomatoes help to keep your skin looking fresh, radiant, and young. So stew them, toss them in salad, or snack on them with some ranch dip and await dewy skin.

Ok you gorgeous ladies, time to get to having the best beauty days on a budget. I'll keep up the research and share what I find. Can't wait till our next chat!

Udderly Gorgeous

Hello Lactating Ladies!

While I was pregnant I was constantly asked if I had planned on breastfeeding. The question puzzled me as I didn't know that is was an option; I thought it was what I was supposed to do. Breastfeeding has so many rewards and benefits for both mom and baby. Breastfeeding helps your uterus go back to its normal size faster, helps you loose weight, and is an excellent way to bond with your baby. You'll be giving your baby the best nutrition, they'll be less likely to have ear infections and other common complications, and breast milk helps with their metabolism if you nurse for at least a year.

Breastfeeding also makes those late night feedings go so much easier. You don't have to trek anywhere to fetch a bottle, don't have to worry about the temperature of the milk, and its always fresh! For the recessionistas...its completely free!

To enhance your breastfeeding experience here are some tips.

1.Keep it flowing!:I discovered that there are several brands of teas that aide in increaing your breast milk production. My personal favortie is Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics. I purchased three boxes from Amazon.com for about $13.00 (which is a great bargain, beleive me I looked around). The tea has a peppermint taste and is delicious. I leave two boxes at home and take one to work and try to have at least two cups a day.

2. She works hard for the money: For a successful breast pumping experience at work, you have to do some prep work. If your breast pump does not come with a carrying case, purchase a cute tote to transport it. Several stores sell cute reusubale shopping bags for cheap that can get the job done. You may also want to purchase a small bag to put freezer packs in and the milk you pump. You will also need a shirt protection plan, that would be your nursing pads. I've tried several and the best are made by the 1st years. I absolutely love them! They are lanolin treated so they help with soreness and make you more comfortable. They are thin so they are discreet. They don't have adhesive but stay in place and I have never sprung a leak while using them.

3. Keeping Victoria's Secret: Breastfeeding in public can be a challenge so its good to prep ahead of time. My older sister purchased an Udder Cover for me and it was a life saver. It effectively covers both my little one and my otherwise exposed parts. The company always has promotions going so check them out. My step-mother sent me a link to get another one for free! No, really it was free!

4. Rip the Runway!: Ok so in searching for cute nursing clothing I didn't find much. I searched my usual haunts Oldnavy and Motherhood Maternity and found that a lot of their clothes were casual and would take some dressing up to be appropriate for work. They do offer cute tops and Motherhood Maternity has affordable nursing bras. I purchased two from Target and they are holding up well. Although I would suggest buying a least four nursing bras. Another tip is to make sure whatever outfit you were on an outing with your little on is nursing friendly. Think to yourself, can I quickly and discreetly feed my little one with what I have on? Needless to say I had a snafoo and I don't want you to have experience that.

Well my nutrient producing mammas, I'll chat with you soon.

Love That Girl

There is a new show on TV One called Love That Girl, it’s a cute comedy. The title made me reflect on how I now feel about my new body. My reflection and I have had a rocky relationship so far. There are days that I feel like I look good for a woman who had a baby then I see other moms and don’t feel too happy about my appearance. So I'm on a mission to find methods to give the much needed love to the girl looking back at me.

I was introduced to Spanx a few years ago and loved what they had to offer. Spanx is a collection of shapewear that provides hosiery that sucks in all the extra spillage. I ordered three pair of the Tight End Tights. They are great because they are reversible so I'm getting more for my dollar. They are kinda pricey but the investment is well worth it. I wear them with jeans, slacks, and dresses. They’re great in the fall and winter. I also purchased a pair of their Super Shaping Sheer Stockings for the times when I don’t feel like tights.

To add to the cinching I have purchased a new Belly Bandit in a smaller size. It comfortably tightens the stomach area, looks smooth under my shirts, and feels comfortable.

My older brother is training to be a police officer and offered some assistance in my quest to love my midsection. Although I haven’t tried it yet he told me to start a crunches regimen. Haven’t gotten around to it yet but I'll keep you all posted.

Ok so I know I can’t be the only woman who dreads shopping for jeans. For the first few weeks that I and my little were getting to know each other I recycled my maternity pants. But it soon became apparent that some new jeans were a must. Since I was 16 years old, the thought of having to try on countless pairs of jeans was enough to make me shed a tear. It’s hard to find jeans that fit because I have a small waist and big thighs. So you can imagine how happy I was when I discovered a brand that fit my curves like they were tailor made. I was delivered a crushing blow when I ordered the brand and realized that they no longer were the quality material and fit that they once were. I was devastated! Then my hunny calmed me down and assured me that I would find jeans that fit, and I did! Thank to the Levis Outlet at Potomac Mills Mall I have three new pair.

Being introduced to the new reflection has its challenges, like what to do with my pre pregnancy clothes that don’t fit. I summoned up all the courage I had and tried on all of my old clothes. I was pleasantly surprised by what did fit. I didn’t allow myself to feel bad about what didn’t fit; I simply moved them for next season when they will make a recurrence.

When it comes to your clothes finding mission, don’t pay attention or get discourage by the size. Focus on fit.

Well ladies, talk to you later! Don’t forget to tell yourself you’re hot!

Mrs. Cellophane

If you've ever seen the movie Chicago you'll remember the scene where Roxy's husband sings a song called Mr. Cellophane; he felt invisible. If you are a new mom you can sympathize with him.In an instant you go from caring for yourself to devoting every waking moment to another person who is completely dependent upon on you. I found my maternity leave to be rewarding yet challenging and I want to share some tips and thoughts with you.

While I spent time bonding with my little one, I noticed that I didnt have much time to care for me. So I quickly learned to find fast ways to care for my skin. One thing that really helped me was facial wipes. I would suggest purchasing the wipes that don't require you to add water or lather them up. Simply wipe off the baby drool and slather on a great moisturizer. You'd be surprised at how much these two little steps can improve your skin and lift you spirits.

Never underestimate the power of a spray of perfume and a swipe of lip gloss. With a newborn, it can be challenging to schedule a decent time to take a shower. In the times when it looks like it may be a 3am shower, spray some body spray on for a quick pick me up. Keep your lips smooth and hydrated with your favorite chapstick and layer it with your sexiest lip gloss.

Some impolite people think its ok to tell you, "You look tired". Of course you look tired, because you are! But who needs a reminder? To combat the sleepy look, stay hydrated. Keep a water bottle by your bed and sip every chance you get. Hydration does wonders for the skin. When you feel up to wearing makeup, try Benefit's Ooh La Lift. It adds light underneath the eye and helps give off a youthful appearance.

Change your clothes every day. Even if you stay in comfy lounge wear, a new outfit can fight off the feeling of being in a predictable rut.

Keep your hair oiled. It maybe hard to find the time and or the energy to do your hair but keeping it oiled is a must. Your body is going through an adjustment period and this can cause your hair to be brittle and dry. Your hair can even break off, I lost two locs! Yikes! Let sleep be the only thing you loose.

Well Maternal Mavens, we'll chat soon!

Project Bringing Sexy Back

Attn: Maternal Agents

Thank you for meeting with me today. This meeting is of great importance. Your mission should you chose to accept it is to prepare for your body to be occupied by only one person.

Goal: Sexy in 6 months

A great tool is binding your stomach. You can do research and find dozens of stomach cinchers that help your stomach decrease and provide back support. I personally used the Belly Bandit. I wish I purchased it before the baby came as I probably would have had even better results. Their most inexpensive belly binding system is $45.00. I wore it every day and washed it in cold water when it was dirty and laid it flat to dry. The only time I took it off was to shower.

Beware of the villain stretch marks and the dreaded post pregnancy pooch. This is a worthy opponent who you need to plan your attack carefully and react quickly. I found two products that I 'm using to tone my skin on diapers.com. The company is called Mustela and they produce products that are safe for breastfeeding mothers. I bought the body firming activator pill and a lotion that helps my skin regain its elasticity. I'll keep you updated on how its working.

I am currently researching safe diet and exercise plans so any suggestions would help! Until next time agents.

Cover Up the Goods

Hello Fabulous Ladies!

As my little one grows inside me, I've noticed that my shirts don't quite cover her living space as much as they used to. I 'm not sure if you ladies have experienced the same dilemma but I want to give a few tips to combat giving an unwanted peep show to the world.

First invest in a belly band. They extend the life of your pre pregnancy pants (great if you are having a fall pregnancy) and look like a shirt. Placing a belly band on gives you the confidence that your belly is fully covered.

Second, invest in spaghetti strap tanks. You can get them for fairly cheap at Old Navy, Target, and Forever21 plus. Get all the basic colors. I've been able to manage with a white one and a black one. I wear them under my shirts and they cover up my belly and compliment my shirts.

Finally I do a bit of camouflage by wearing cardigans, jackets, blazers, shawls, and boleros. Depending on the length I can button a few buttons near the base of my belly. Also if it is a shorter jacket, it can bring the attention upward to your beautiful face. To avoid an embarrassing show of flesh, be sure to adjust your clothing with every bathroom trip and when you stand up after sitting for a while.

Keep those goodies in the jar ladies. TTYL!!

Spotts are not Just on Dalamations!

What's up Ladies!

Ok, so the other night I was doing my normal after shower routine and noticed some invaders on my breasts! Moles! They shocked me so much that I said aloud "What in the world?!" After a call to my resident advice nurse (my wonderful mom) I calmed down. She explained that the new spot are normal and much to my delight they should fade away.

I have more spots on my face then the puppies from 101 Dalmatians! I've been using concealer and a green stick (green neutralizes the color red) to cut down on their appearances while in public. If you are experiencing the same dilemma, try using a gentle scrub at least twice a week and cleaning your makeup before you got to bed. I have also been experiencing some discoloration on my forehead. Just a general redness that resembles acne but without the bumps. The green stick helps with that too.

When I thought a nasty pimple was leasing space on my face I went to the bathroom mirror to investigate the situation. There was a dark line in it that resembled a hair. Turns out that's what it was and it was a stubborn one. I enlisted my sweety to help me remove the ingrown hair on my cheek.

I’m trying to be proactive about the possibility of bags and lines from sleepless nights so I "borrowed" (swiped from my mom's house) some samples of Estee Lauder and Mary Kay samples for eye cream. I have been putting it under my eyes on the nights I can remember. So far there are no lines so I 'm happy. I also swindled some dark spot treatment from my mom's house and have been using it on acne marks. I have had some dryness around my nose so I cut down on how much water I use on my face and ensure that I slather on a great moisturizer every morning and night.

Until next time, stay fabulous!

Fallin' for Cozy

Hey Ladies!

What says fall like crisp mornings, mild temperature days, and cozy sweaters? If you're like me the thought of a new wardrobe warms your blood and excites your senses. The trouble with fall maternity is the season's weather requires layering and in our physical state we don't want to add too much bulk. So I have been on the hunt for clothes that keep my tummy warm and fulfill my need for style.

I took a trip to the Thrift and was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Whole maternity suits, cute sweaters, nice slacks, fabulous winter coats and adorable dresses! The great thing about the Thrift is that a lot of them have discount days and membership benefits. I bought a great velvet blazer, spicy blouse, and a cute laid back sweater for less than $10! The thrift is a great place for basics and will help you transition from maternity clothing to your regular wardrobe. Oh and the baby clothes! My mom bought the little one six outfits and spent $5!

Motherhood Maternity is one of the least expensive maternity clothing designers and if you sign up for their email they have great benefits. They'll send you coupons for you and baby, hold items in your shopping basket, and tell you when they get new merchandise in. I checked out their fall line of dresses and they are soo cute. Can't wait to see them paired with colored tights and booties. By the way check out Gap.com and oldnavy.com for convenient outfit ideas.

Spanx has great panty hose and smooth out any lumps and bumps. Peruse around their website and you will find great ways to accentuate your figure and make every outfit fit well.

Tarjay (Target) has some nice outerwear designed by Liz Lange. She is a great designer who was gracious enough to create a more affordable line of maternity clothing for us fashionistas.

So grab a cup of hot coco and get to shopping ladies!

Shower Me

Hello Ladies!
Just wanted to chat a little about your baby shower ensemble. This will take some planning so start early. I purchased my outfit, a dress, from Forever 21's maternity line. I spent less than $30 and was pleased with the fit. I purchased one size up from their line as they run small. Because my chest isn’t as big as most pregnant women's I had to use a safety pin to keep the top closed. So if you have a couple of dollars to spare, I suggest ordering your outfit early and taking it to a seamstress to customize the fit. Most dry cleaners will have a seamstress on staff.

Onto foot jewelry, heels! I love the way they can quickly boost your confidence and make you figure gorgeous. In order for me to pull off this oh so sexy look I had to enact a plan of action. I practiced in my heels around the house. Now a fair warning, if your tootsies are swollen the shoes will be uncomfortable for a little while, but hang in there they do loosen up. As a precautionary measure I wore sandals out of the house and put my heels on once I got to the shower.

Jewelry, hair, and makeup...oh how I love to be a girl! Going minimal on your jewelry allows your face to take center stage. Indulge yourself and take a trip to the hair salon. Allow your tresses to be pampered and just relax. As far as makeup goes, I searched YouTube and found great tutorials. I suggest picking a celebrity or a makeup look you like and seeing if there is a tutorial on it. There are plenty of different interpretations so you'll be sure to find one that compliments your personality, outfit, and the occasion. You can usually use the make-up you already have, but most people post where they purchased their make-up. I found one on Jennifer Lopez's make-up and practiced the look a week before the shower. The trial run really helped as I could see how to better apply it on the day of the shower.

I also saved money by purchasing eye shadow from CVS. Drugstore eye shadow has a tendency to crease so invest in a good shadow base. I used MallyBeauty's eye shadow base on my lids then applied foundation on top. To add an extra layer of defense I used Too Faced's Shadow Insurance. I feel asleep with my make-up on (a big no no!) and the next morning my shadows looked as fresh as before! If you can splurge on a trip to the make-up counter for a professional make-over, go for it! Cameras will be flashing and you want to be sure that you feel confident to take each picture.

Posing. I know that there aren’t many ways a preggo woman can pose without looking large and in charge but I suggest sometime in the mirror before your shower. Try out some poses that you feel most comfortable in. Try some sitting and others standing. You'll notice if your outfit does funny things with different poses. You don’t want to look bunched up if at all possible.

Well trendy mommas, I'll catch up with you later! Stay haute!

Arr She Blows!!

Hi Mommies-to-be!

Today's blog is taking a step back on fashion and honing in on health instead. Two nights ago, my sweetheart and I were actively participating in our childbirth classes and I sprung a leak! I had gone to the ladies room just before it happened but I guess my body and mind were not on the same wave length. When I told my honey what happened he immediately said we should mention it to the instructor as I had also been experiencing horrible back pain for almost 24 hours.

After explaining my awkward and embarrassing predicament, the instructor suggested that I get evaluated. Since we were already at the hospital, I headed upstairs to get checked out. Oh and by the way if you have to got to the hospital for any reason, get food! We learned that lesson and my love went for a Mc Donald's run (I know, soo not healthy, but I was having a fat girl moment and he wanted to indulge me).

So after being hooked up to monitors and being asked a gazillion questions a test was administered on me. The nurse used a q-tip to test if the fluid was amniotic fluid. She explained that if my water had been broken I would have to stay in the hospital until I delivered! Not just day but weeks! I was already mentally planning my break out. Lol! Less than an hour later it was determined that all was well and I was given a clean bill of health.

Apparently I had a virus and the liquid was discharge. The first signs would have been an unusual odor, when asked I said I hadn't noticed one. Later my love told me he had, wonderful partner. The virus will be easily treated with antibiotics.Ok so background story done, lets get done to the moral of it. Pay attention to the scents your body emits, be knowledgeable about pre term labor signs, and always air on the side of caution. Its better to have the doctor tell you there is nothing wrong then to ignore signs and complicate your pregnancy.

Until next time moms, stay healthy!

The Hair of the Matter

Hello Cuties!
Are you realizing that your hair texture has changed? Are you tresses longer than before? Pregnancy affects your whole body in so many ways. How do you combat the newly found characteristics? The right hair, skin, and body care line up.

I was introduced to the Taliah Wajid Black Earth Products line a little over 3 years ago. I was experiencing dry scalp, rough hair, and my hair stopped growing. I began using her products and was amazed by the results. My hair was softer, easier to manage, had beautiful shine. The scent is awesome and the texture of the products lets you know you are using quality. As far as price goes, its inexpensive. You'll spend between $7-$13 for any of the items in the line. You can order her products online or find a local carrier on her website. www.naturalhair.org

The other day I scratched my head and it looked like a snow storm was happening in my little cubicle. Dry flakes! I was distraught because I knew I kept my hair well moisturized. I changed my facial wash and the flaking around my face calmed down. The old face wash left a residue that did not agree with my pregnancy hair line.

What's happens internally will definitely show up on you physically. It's important to focus on what you put in your body. So, you have to treat yourself well. Vitamins, water, and green tea with lemon, are a three pronged attack against lack luster hair. You can purchase decaffeinated green tea so that it is safe.

Roots showing? Is your hair looking multicolored? I know a lot of moms are concerned about if dying their hair will be harmful to the baby. After researching, the general consensus is to stay away from the dye in your first trimester. I've touched up my hair only once during my pregnancy and don't plan on doing it again until a month after my precious one's arrival. My suggestion is to ensure that you oil your hair as its texture may change form the dye and the additional hormones.

Take care of those beautiful tresses!

Au Natural

Hey Sensational Senoritas!

About a month ago, my big sister posted a video on my facebook wall. The video was of a young woman discussing Chris Rock's film Good Hair. She was reflecting on her own beliefs and discussing what she taught her daughters about the subject. That got my wheels spinning about the lessons I will pass on to my daughter. The debate of good and bad hair has raged on for centuries. From the time of the middle passage until now, African American people have conversed about what the terms really mean.

On the cover of beauty mags, glamorous Africa American women have straight, flowing, and most likely chemically treated hair. I must admit that as a teenager the images made me feel inadequate with my natural hair. I wanted a perm so bad because my aunt said I needed one, boys didn't like girls with natural hair, and my hair was a challenge to groom. Even with the feelings of inadequacy, I have always despised the terms good and bad hair. It bothers me to think that the mentality is passed down from generation to generation.

So having said all of that, what do I tell my daughter? The young woman in the video made a good point that good and bad hair isn't any particular state, be it natural or chemically treated. I think that the message I will give to her is to do to her hair what feels good to her. Ignore the fact mommy has locs and that the girls in school have straight hair. Focus on making your hair healthy and don't give it more importance than it deserves. Keep it clean and well maintained, don't be pressured to wear any hairstyle. I will never tell her that she needs a perm or that natural is the only way to go. We can discuss the benefits of both so that she can make an informed decision when she is old enough. Until then I'll leave her hair in its natural state so that she can have the option later.

In Chris Rock's film girls were getting perms as young as three years old! If you do something to permanently alter your child's hair you limit what they can do when its their decision.

As far as my hair journey goes, locs fit my lifestyle. I only had a perm for three years. Afterward I kept my hair in braids and cornrows. I've never been the kind of girl to get up early to do my hair so locs were a perfect solution. I can put oil in it and go!

However you choose to do your do, rock it to the fullest! TTYL!

What Other People Think of Me is None of My Business-Rupaul

Hey Curvaceous Mamasitas!

Ok. So since my pregnancy I've gotten mixed reviews on my appearance. I have had some that make me feel on top of the world and others that made me feel down in the dumps. What I've gathered from both is to live like Rupaul said, with complete disregard for people's negative comments and soak up all of the positivity. I've heard " I see you're getting fat" and "I just noticed you were pregnant (and I was 6 1/2 months preggo with a noticeable weight gain)".

Since my weight has always been an emotional and physical roller coaster ride, I promised myself that during my pregnancy I wouldn't pay attention to the scale and focus on my growing baby. But sometimes that's hard to do. So here's my suggestion to you when you noticed that your nose is widening or people say "I thought you may be pregnant but it looked like you were just getting fat", say my body is creating a comfortable space for my child. And if your sweetie can't console that fat feeling, understand that men may not understand that this is still our bodies and we want to feel good. My honey has the distinct way of making me feel sexy with the simplest words. So I've made those words affirmations and suggest that you create some of your own and stand naked in the mirror and marvel at your new curves.

Unfortunately they are a lot of rude people in the world and we have to encounter them. I've even had people comment on the time of year I conceived! The thing that helps me shake off all of the foolishness is to remember that something inside them is unhappy and we all know misery loves company.

So beautiful moms, if you don't hear it today...YOU ARE SOO FLY, SEXY, and GORGEOUS!!!

Head Over Heels

Hey Lactating Ladies!

So I was watching one of my fav movies the other day called Kinky Boots. I know it sounds naughty but its a British dramady (drama meets comedy). Its a great movie because in the end each character realizes that they have to be true to themselves and care for others around them. One of the lines really resonates with me. One of the leading characters is a drag queen and says that heels are "three inches of tubular sex". Ok so the line is kinda out there but the thought behind it is so true. Heels make a woman stand different, feel confident, and make her calves look awesome. But how do we preggers capture that feeling when our feet are swollen and the thought of standing in flats makes us wince in agony?!

Dr. Scholl's to the rescue! I have a closet full of heels and haven't worn any in months. I miss the great feeling of sliding into a killer pair of heels and modeling in front of my mirror. Between my career (social work) and my ever expanding feet I have to requalify my shoes as "sitting pretty shoes". These are the shoes that look way to good to sit in the closet but that you can only tolerate if you only sit when wearing them. I have been contemplating just how to pull of this venture. I'm going to share with you my plan of attack.

I plan on wearing heels to my baby shower and need to prepare for this venture. Thanks to a friend, I discovered that certain shoe stores will stretch shoes for you. My feet have always been wide so I was ecstatic to find this out. I think I 'm going to try this out at home. I'm going to wear the heels I plan on rocking for the shower for at least an hour a day to stretch them out. I'll place a shoe horn or something to retain the shape.

If my tootsies begin to scream I'll dip them in my foot bath and make use of the foot treatment kit I was given as a prize at a bridal shower. The foot bath I purchased from Walmart for less than $20! Then there is my personal masseuse, my honey. Hope my antics and possible discomfort spares you the same fate.

Until next time fashionistas, stay foxy!

All Dolled Up

Hey Regal Mommas!

I guess the world doesn't stop spinning just because your pregnant. There are still formal events and occasions to get all dolled up. During my pregnancy I have been invited to three events that require me to seriously plan what I will wear. I had to get an outfit to two weddings and a tea! Not an easy task considering there is a bump that can not be ignored.

So I did what I usually do, look on the Internet. I ordered a dress from Target and was quite disappointed. The designer was Moody Mammas and I can see being moody in the dress. It was poorly made and was no appropriate for any dress occasion. I didn't feel pretty at all. I sent it back.

I also made an unrelated trip to the thrift store and found a pink and purple cocktail dress. My mom found a tea dress at the thrift store months ago and at the time I couldn't picture an even to wear it to.

The key to being all dolled up is to pay attention to fit, practice in your heels, and go soft with your make-up. The wrong dress can make you look like you have an engorged beer belly. So be open to trying the dress on and give it a spin. Sit down in it, practice poses, and see where it hits with your heels. I wore the pink and purple cocktail dress to a wedding and got compliments. I wore a flower in my hair and minimal jewelry to allow the dress and my new body to take center stage.

Your feet are not what they used to be, so practice in your heels. You may need to take a trip to Paylay (Payless) and get a different size for the occasion. Allow your pregnancy glow be the focus of your make-up. Choose delicate colors and soft lips. Your bump makes you beautiful and you don't need too much to dress it up.

I'll post pictures of both outfits, hope it inspires you! Can't wait till our next chat!

Is That Pool Water?

Hey Pretty Ladies,

The first time I witnessed stretch marks was on a visit to my grandmother's house. I used to love to share the same bed with her, watch tv, and chat about anything and everything. On one visit I watched her as she got out of the bed and noticed lines on her back and legs. In my innocence I asked "Grandma, why do you have pool water on your body?" She laughed and as I got older I realized that those same lines were on me and the were the evil and dreaded stretch marks!

So what's a girl to do when her skin has to stretch in order to make room for a baby? Are we doomed to live with these wretched invaders? Nope! My advisor told me about a great cream called Mother's Friend Body Skin Cream. You can purchase it at amazon.com. I rub it on my stomach, but, and upper legs. Also I'm not sure if its just an old wives's tale but I've been told not to scratch anywhere. Apparently scratching causes stretch marks. I just gently rub when I get the sensation to scratch. So far these methods have kept the preggo stretch marks at bay.

If you can't afford the cream, my suggestion would be to keep your skin moisturized. Invest in a really good lotion and incorporate coco butter into your morning and night regimen. Now go out and fight the good fight. Say it with me No Stretch Marks!
